You've got the characters all right here, and the decision to pay more attention to the main ones, their motivations and relationships is, in my opinion, right. Otherwise, it's just a farce with a bunch of bustling people who don't understand what they're doing here, like in modern Star Wars with "amendments" from Disney :-)
