I don't have main characters. In each chapter I focus on a set of character.
I actually did what you said with the russian android soldiers, they were all 3D models blend with the 2D characters.
I only convert characters that I know will appear and not all at once.
Backgrounds are easy to make, so no problem there.
The models are backed up on a external drive but that does no guarantee they will work, I had problems before on my last migration to a new PC.
Also, one advantage to the 2D characters is that I am limited only to my own capabilities and not to the software and models like with the 3D ones. (I have to give up on a lot of ideas and designs for the 3D characters)

I was think of something like this... but the 3D characters are very... uhmmm... risky... they rely on a very large database and very unstable software.
And if I ever lose the database or the software I can always return to the 2D version of the comic.
Also, I receive a lot of criticism that I have too many characters, so with this 3D version I can reduce some of them here and only keep them in the 2D version.
