A Short Guide To Cleaning A Vacuum Cleaner Properly

Many people have been disappointed because their high-quality vacuums, which come from reputable brands and are supposed to last several years, break within only a year or two. Those machines lost suction, ran out of power quickly, or even stopped working altogether.

A lot of times, it's not that those vacuums are flawed products. The reasons may actually be the lack of maintenance from their owners. If you're worried you've neglected your own vacuum so far and want to learn how to take it off properly, here are some tips from us.

Clean The Dust Bin

Many overlook this step, even though it's very important and too obvious to mention. At the end of the day, airflow needs a clear way to move through your vacuum. A full bin or overstuffed bag will block your machine's airflow, reducing the suction power or even preventing your vacuum from picking up dirt.

Regularly check out if your vacuum is too full to continue cleaning. Sometimes, simply dumping out the collected debris off a dust bin makes the machine work again.

The same thing is true if you own a bagged model. Replace your full bag with a new one before going ahead with your cleaning.

Clean The Filters

Vacuum cleaners, premium or cheap models alike, will eventually have their filters clogged with dirt and dust. When the situation gets serious, the airway is blocked, and your vacuum will lose suction as a result.

It may take a few years for it to get to this point where it can't vacuum at all. But without a doubt, dust builds up over time on filters and reduces the machine's performance even. It may escape your notice, but the reduced suction is inevitable. So you may as well take action and give the filters a clean regularly before the whole vacuum breaks down.

Most manufacturers make a recommendation for how often the user should clean or replace those filters. These intervals vary greatly. Some may ask you to clean the filters every six or twelve months, while others recommend a clean after every few uses. These are strict recommendations, and your vacuum is likely to vacuum just fine if you delay the maintenance. But it's still better to clean the filters on time whenever possible, or the dust buildup will catch up with your vacuum eventually.

The actual steps depend on the construction and design of a specific machine. Some vacuums use only one filter, while others utilize three. Make sure you don't forget any of them.

On top of that, vacuum filters can't be washed and reused forever. There will come a time when they can't do the job anymore and need a replacement. Reusable filters, however, can indeed last for a very long time.

Generally, follow the instructions of your model and take off the filters in the vacuum. Then tap the dust off them above a trash bin until they're fairly clean. Finally, rinse them under running water and allow them to air-dry completely before you attach them back to the vacuum.

Check For Blockage

Besides the filters and dust bin, clogs can happen to various points along the airway and lead to the same terrible effect. Your vacuum may suck up a pen or a sock by accident and get jammed.

These occasions happen more often than you might think. Oversized objects (like big scraps of paper) and slightly tacky debris (like strands of pet hair or moist clods of dirt) are the most common culprits. They may get stuck inside the twisty and narrow areas of your vacuum and stop it from working. The intake channel of the cleaning head is a spot prone to this kind of issue, for example.

When you think there is a blockage within your vacuum, look at the transitional areas. Take off the cleaning head and the hoses to check for any vulnerable spots. Use a flashlight and look deeper inside the vacuum, and clean any clogs with pipe cleaners.

Free The Tangled Brush Roll

If you own a shedding pet or anyone in your family has long hair, there's always a chance the spinning brush roll of your vacuum gets wrapped up by mops of hair.

Hair, as well as thread and floss, may not stop the brush roll at first. But over time, those kinds of string-like debris cover more and wrap the brush roll, preventing it from rotating freely.

Not only can the brush roll stop spinning, but your vacuum's bearings and drive belt may get damaged as well. To prevent it from happening in the first place, consider the Best vacuum for long hair.

Those issues can be avoided if you have a regular maintenance schedule. Have an eye on the brush every time you use your vacuum. If it's heavily tangled with hair, remove the hair before vacuuming.

The simplest method is to cut it with a blade or scissors. Be careful not to injury yourself or damage the brush's bristles. Some vacuums come with a groove along with the brush, which helps guide the cutting tool in case a user needs to detangle the brush.

Or you can also pull the hair off by hand. If you have trouble cutting really right tangles, a small rotary tool may come in handy. Again, be careful and don't destroy the brush roll instead.

Your vacuum model may allow you to remove the brush for maintenance. Check for this information in the manual and do so so you can cut away wraps and tangles easier. While you're at it, give the brush roll a clean by dusting it with compressed air.

Deeper Maintenance

The steps we've mentioned will help your vacuum stay in good condition most of the time. But other rarer issues may also occur, which usually demand a closer examination and more thorough cleaning.

For example, if you keep the batteries of a cordless vacuum drained all the time, it may degrade the capacity, and as a result, your vacuum will have a shorter runtime. So even if you don't need your vacuum for a while, give it a charge whenever the batteries are low.
